Icelandia Presents: Geology with Helga
Volcanologist Helga will share some of her stunning imagery and know-how about Iceland's fascinating geology and current seismic activity on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Don't miss the Icelandia virtual reality experiences at the event.
Iceland is well known for its dynamic and fascinating geology.
There are very few places in the world where you can see geysers, hot springs, lava fields, fault lines, and sometimes even an active volcano so distinctly. For Icelanders, the geological connection is rooted in their daily lives and cultural identity, manifesting in a respectful and adaptive coexistence with the natural forces that shape their environment. Icelandic volcanologist Helga Kristin Torfadottir is here to explain Iceland's fascinating geology in an easy-to-understand way and to show you some of the stunning sights she has seen with her work. Of course, if you have a technical question about igneous petrology, she can answer that, too. Her volcanology expertise is how magma evolves on its journey up through the crust!
Guests will also be invited to participate in a VR experience where they can explore Icelandia‘s tour offerings, such as their Glacier Tours and ATV tours. Prepare to be transported to vast glaciers and black-sand beaches!
Icelandair's Wheel of Prizes will be on-site during the event. Three lucky attendees at several events throughout the weekend will get the chance to spin and win a range of terrific Icelandic prizes.
Helga Kristín Torfadóttir
Helga is a young Icelandic geologist/volcanologist specializing in how magma evolves in the crust and how volcanoes are structured from within. She is finishing her PhD in volcanology and petrology, focusing on the structures of magma chambers. Helga has been actively studying Iceland's most significant and dangerous volcano, Öræfajökull, in extreme detail. She has also been monitoring the most recent eruptions (practically in her backyard) on the Reykjanes peninsula. She is recognized for her efforts in communicating geology in a simple-to-understand way—with stunning imagery—to a broader audience through Instagram, where she shares insights into her research and the fascinating world of geology in Iceland. Helga has also been featured widely on The Guardian, BBC News, BBC Earth, National Geographic, Netflix, and many Icelandic news and international outlets.
