Reykjavík Arts Festival is a multidisciplinary biennial festival focusing on new commissions and the creative intersection of the arts. This year, Reykjavík Arts Festival will take place from June 1–19 across the city of Reykjavík with various cultural events. To the widest possible audience, it presents exhibitions and performances of contemporary and classical works in major cultural venues and unconventional spaces throughout the city.
The theme of the 2022 festival is “On the Other Side”
Humanity will not have seen the last of the Covid-19 pandemic in the summer of 2022. However, we are already "on the other side" of it in the sense that the world will never be the same. At the same time, climate change is having devastating effects on all of our lives, and there is no way for us to continue down the same path as before.
The theme is left open for interpretation, as it is multifaceted in its simplicity. Some ways to look at it might include:
- Seeing things from the other side: new perspectives, new approaches
- This side / The other side: Dichotomy (where everything is either/or) and its impact on society - us/them, truth/lie, mind/matter, male/female
- On the other side of the mainstream: Queer culture, fringe culture, etc.
- On the other side: beyond reality, the future
